COVID-19 flights with Singapore Airlines, are they good?
Flight SQ 177 & SQ 227 trip report in Economy Class (23/01/2022)
SGN-SIN-MEL
Welcome to Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat International airport). A year ago, I took a flight to Melbourne through Singapore with Singapore Airlines. Unfortunately, there were no direct flights at that time (they were only available two days later), so I had to transfer at Changi airport. As I was flying, Australia's borders had just reopened, so face masks was mandatory. For the 1st leg of this trip, I flew with economy class on a 4 years old Airbus 350-900 registered 9V-SHK. Flight time was about 2h and 5mins.
Singapore Airlines, a member of Star Alliance is a 5 stars airlines and they are the world’ best airlines now in 2023. Their fleet includes Boeing 737 Max, 777-300ER, 787-10 and mixed of Airbus 350-900 with 3 versions and 380-800. My flight was operated by a medium-haul version of A350 so the seat feature may be different from other versions. The legroom is good with large seat pockets and a foldable tray table. There is also a power outlet located between each seat and USB- ports are available too. As this flight was taken during the pandemic, passengers were provided a care kit that included a face mask and wet pipes. Headphones were given with a care kit when we boarded the plane as well.
After take-off, lunch was served. I went for nasi lemak with a banana mouse cake and a cup of tea. The meal tray looked small but I was quite full after the meal. The food was delicious and I was impressed that SQ used wooden cutlery and paper boxes for the meal.
Before my departure date, transit passengers weren’t allow to leave the airport and they had to stayed in a designed area. Luckily, I didn’t have to stay in that area so I spent most of my transit time to explore Changi Terminal 1,2,3. There aren’t much spotting spots because security areas are in front of the boarding gate. In most countries, passengers have to pass through security before immigration and boarding while in some European airports, passengers do security before boarding.
For my 2nd flight to Melbourne, I flied with another A350 with a medium-haul seat configuration. There weren’t anyone seating in my row so I had the whole 3 seats to myself so I could make a bed for a better sleeping experience.
The seat feature and configuration of both flights were the same so there weren’t any huge differents. Passengers are provided with headphones and a care kit again. However, for this medium-haul flight, a soft pillow, blanket and pair of slippers were provided. However, this time a welcome drink or expected hot/cold towel weren’t available. Due to the pandemic, there was only one meal for this 7h flight and it was dinner instead of breakfast.
SQ has had a huge entertainment system with plenty of movies and shows to choose from. I watched some shows before going to sleep. The crew was friendly and helpful. They were always there to help and check passengers if they needed something. Unfortunately, I couldn’t sleep well because there was a crying baby behind me so it was a little bit noisy. The crew set up a mini tent in the last row of the aircraft for them, which was unexpectable.
The lavatory was clean and fresh. There weren’t an amenity kit but I could find all of those amenities in the lavatory’s drawers. Snacks were available in the galley during the flight as well. 3h before landing, I went there and took some snacks as an early breakfast for myself.
Before landing, I filled in my incoming passenger form and watched notifications by the airlines on the entertainment screen. They showed passengers allowed and abandoned items that we can bring to Australia. It also gave us instructions to declare our items too. Drinks was served before landing and I had a smooth landing.
That was my experience with Singapore Airlines. I hope I willl fly with them soon. What’s your experience? Share them below!
